What happens when a national staff member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes decides to write an "insider's view" about the college and professional athletes that he's known --- up close and personal?
"Faith of the Crimson Tide" is the answer --- a refreshing book that shows us the personal and private lives of these young athletes. Author Wayne Atcheson, who served not only with the FCA's national headquarters but also on the athletic staff of a major southern university, clearly had access to private moments and exclusive interviews with well-known players including Shaun Alexander, the NFL's 2005 MVP with 28 touchdowns!
Atcheson gets it right --- we are tired of the cliche's about pro players being rowdy, raunchy, and self-indulgent. While that may be true of some, this book points with accuracy and hope to the stories of many others --- accomplished players who not only proclaim a genuine Christian faith, but also live it out in their daily lives.
This book makes a great gift for a sports fan of any age --- but also makes no secret of its Christian orientation. The word "Faith" in the title is well-chosen: these players show us faith in action, both on the field and off.
A must-read for anyone who believes that virtue, honor, and good character can still be found on the gridiron and in the stadiums. Thank you, Wayne Atcheson!
